Chapter 6

Misty scowled at Max for making her do the lying when she entered Command Center. He flicked his eyes away from her as he leaned over Adam's shoulder, continuing with their conversation, not at all affected by her nonverbal indictment against him.

The Capitol Command Tertiary Center was a massive place. All four walls of the room built high and broad were wallpapered with seventy-two inch video monitors all flipping scenes spying out snowcapped mountains in Cangshan in Dali City, China to the Matterhorn, Zarmott in Switzerland. They flipped between deserts, cities, jungles, wetlands, forests, whatever was left of remote communities, monitoring enemy activities in all regions of the earth. Some of the screens changed into to targets, zoomed in on certain positions within a home or brought an image of a person and ran the data beside the picture. Four other operating cells shared the room, all in their own universe until called up on to cross communicate, which never happened. It was important that cells were self-contained because the Resistance movement was in play all over the world. The takeover will be the pieces of the puzzle, merging together to engage in one massive assault.

Facing the panels, seated within and manning the cockpit circling the monitors on the ground floor, Tech Hands worked with their assigned handler. It was clear Adam belonged to Max. The Resistance organization only sought and enlisted the greatest technical minds society had to offer. The Tech Hands, they too had their unique rite of passage. Misty wondered, as she stood afar, watching Max and Adam more than likely discussing what's imminent, what was Adam One's story.

He looked really young, baby faced actually but according to him he was sixteen, he appeared to be more like thirteen. His hair was burnt blonde by the heat and skin bronzed tanned, like the real sun did that to him. She figured Adam had to have lived in another country recently, where beaches were safe, and for an extended period of time. Wherever he came from must've been a warm place as well. He wore Bermuda styled khaki shorts and a plain over-washed olive green tee shirt. He either didn't know anything about Quadrant 4904's wacky climate changes or didn’t care. Regardless, tech hands rarely left their command posts during duty. In six months Adam One will be replaced by a relief for about three months. That’s when he’ll get a break.

Adam hadn't paid attention to Misty as of yet. He'd been too engaged in the exchange going on between him and Max. Max would talk and Adam would click away on the keyboard. Both would glare up at the screen to watch the view change, which at the moment looked to be the inside of an office. They focused on the side view of a slender, well-built man with broad shoulders in a fitted black business suit standing on one side of a wooden block counter, being serviced by a hefty tired looking woman who barely looked at him—basically the average day bureaucrat.
